On Aug. 17, GeT_RiGhT celebrated the 10th anniversary of winning his only CS:GO Major trophy at ESL One: Cologne 2014. He visited the event a decade later and explained to Dot Esports what makes Counter-Strike so special.
A former pro and current streamer, GeT_RiGhT was one of the broadcasters in Cologne covering this year’s playoffs live from a dedicated booth in the Lanxess Arena, with the likes of fl0m. Dot sat down with the Swede at the event, and given it was the 10th anniversary of his Major win, we talked about the changes he’d like to see in the game’s next decade. GeT_RiGhT’s answer was simple—since CS is full of love and dedication, he’d like it to stay the same.
“CS is basically a living organ.,” GeT_RiGhT said. He later explained how the game’s community is so engaged with it, which has been a case for years. He also explained it’s very easy to get hooked on Counter-Strike, since its basic rules and mechanics are simple, which keeps the community growing each day. “CS is so straightforward, easy to understand. A human who doesn’t like games will understand it after watching half a game.”
At the same time, the Swede underlined how there’s so much depth to CS—like soccer. The basics are easy to grasp and understand, but if you want to dive deeper, it’s also more than possible, contrary to some other esports.
“If you want to go a little bit deeper, you obviously can. But it’s not like a MOBA game where you have to buy this item to build up whatever and so on. That’s more advanced for casual viewers. But CS is basically… like football [soccer]. Even if you’re not into it, you understand it,” GeT_RiGhT pointed out.
While trying to take a closer look at the specific changes he’d like to see in the next 10 years, there was hardly a negative aspect he would get rid of. GeT_RiGhT mentioned tiny nitpicks like having quicker and more substantial updates, but that’s something everybody would wish for. Instead, the former Ninjas in Pyjamas player focused mostly on the community aspect of CS, and expressed his hopes for it to stay the same.
“The thing I want to stay the same is the dedication from everyone and also, the love of the game that many of us have. There are so many players who haven’t touched the game for a long time and are still here [at events], CS is still around, everyone’s still interested in it and hooked on it. Many of them at some point are like ‘why did I leave’ if they ever did. And then they come back and understand it is one of the best games of all time,” GeT_RiGhT added.
Last year, GeT_RiGhT told us he might eventually come back to CS as more than just a content creator, and could possibly try out coaching. Considering his presence at numerous events and his love for the game, this might not be entirely out of the equation, especially if the community remains as passionate as it is now.
