Is Destiny 2 ending?

Rumors have been circulating for some time that The Final Shape would be Destiny 2′s last expansion and after the most recent Bungie leadership and layoff scandal many have been left wondering this is the end of Destiny 2.

Here’s what we know about Bungie’s plans for Destiny 2 in the future.

As of writing today, Bungie hasn’t confirmed Destiny 2‘s end, which means there’s still a future for Destiny 2. What that looks like, however, has become the big question.

Things become cloudy after Bungie laid off 17 percent of its workforce on Aug. 1, with the Sony-owned studio claiming this was due to broader economic realities, despite the success of Destiny 2’s latest expansion, The Final Shape. This was the studio’s second major layoff in the past year. Over 100 staff were sacked in the first round at the end of October 2023 because the company didn’t meet its financial goals. In a post-layoff Q&A session, employees asked if the leadership team had considered salary cuts to prevent layoffs. As reported by IGN, the response was that Bungie “wasn’t that kind of company.”

With so much of Destiny 2 and Bungie’s development team—including Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy—gone, the future of this franchise is quite bleak. Bungie is working with PlayStation Studios on its brand-new science-fantasy project, but it’s not another Destiny 2 expansion or Destiny 3, which was never actually in development.

The devs are working on Codename: Frontiers, which may be more episodes or a new Destiny 2 expansion. If it’s either of those, the franchise may have some years left on the track.

The real kicker about this latest round of layoffs, though, is CEO Pete Parsons has blamed them on the company’s financial challenges. This suggestions things may not be well behind the scenes within the Destiny 2 studio. (That’s before we even get to Parsons spending $2.3 million on classic cars recently, of course, which has led to many calling for his resignation.)

Given the current state of Bungie after these latest layoffs and what it may mean for Destiny 2 content and projects, the future looks grim.
