What is Project T? Riot’s rumored Destiny 2 competitor, explained

You don't see too many MMOFPS these days.

For the past decade, Riot Games has aimed to broaden its horizons as a developer. Known chiefly for League of Legends, Riot has been hard at work opening its universe and exploring multiple genres of games—and another may be added to the list soon.

Alongside FPS title VALORANT, card game Legends of Runeterra (which has been heavily scaled back), autobattler Teamfight Tactics, and fighting game 2XKO, Riot has supposedly been working on “Project T,” an upcoming MMOFPS possibly set in the VALORANT universe with similarities drawn to Bungie looter shooter Destiny 2.

Here’s everything we know about Riot’s Project T.

Project T is a game reportedly in development at Riot. Project T has yet to be formally announced, but several leaks over the past year plus a few job postings—which have since been taken down—piqued the gaming community’s interest.

A report by “Riot MMO” in May 2023 detailed the original round of leaks from Discord user NanoPIX#7517, who had spotted mentions of Project T a few months prior. Evidence included a Riot job posting for an “unpublished R&D product,” including work alongside a combat designer and a requirement for “experience working with camera or controls in a AAA PvP FPS.”

Other details included a seasonal model, emphasis on both character and world-building, and several mentions of “competitive multiplayer” and “mobile gaming” in the required qualifications section. The report surmised Project T would have RPG-like elements but included multiplayer PvP, similar to that of Destiny 2 or Planetside 2.

The Riot MMO website includes much speculation, but information about Project T has been scarce since the leak. Many were worried the scale of the title and its release would be affected following Riot’s massive layoffs, as well as the supposed “reset” in the direction taken by the team in March, who had been working on a Runeterra MMORPG.

When can we expect to hear more about Project T?

It’s tough to say when fans will learn more about the Project T. Riot co-founder Marc Merrill said in March the MMO team will be “going dark,” and while this was likely in reference to the Runeterra MMORPG, there may be some crossover between it and Project T.

We do know the title remains in development according to an X/Twitter post from datamining team 404 LEAK on July 29, 2024. Little more was shared other than the same details uncovered in 2023, so it certainly does seem like the MMOFPS remains a go.

As far as a release date goes, assuming we use the same timeframe as fighting game 2XKO, it’s going to be a wait. Project L, now 2XKO, was hinted at back in 2016 and as of writing is yet to officially release. Given the scale of MMO projects in comparison and we’re already looking at multiple years before Project T actually hits shelves.
