Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast are expanding the Universes Beyond IP library to include Marvel through a Magic: The Gathering multi-set deal unveiled on Oct. 23.

The Universes Beyond products within the MTG trading card game are typically legal to play in Eternal formats like Commander, Vintage, Pauper, and Legacy. There are some exceptions, though, like the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set that launched in June. Potentially following the same path as LTR is an upcoming Universes Beyond IP crossover with Marvel, which was announced today and is slated to drop in 2025.

“Trading cards have always been a part of Marvel’s DNA, so this collaboration takes that experience to a whole new level,” said Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Comics and franchise. “With the depth that our storytelling and characters bring to the table, we can’t wait for fans to see how the Marvel Universe translates seamlessly into gameplay within these Magic: The Gathering products and sets for years to come.”

With the announcement of the Marvel and Hasbro partnership, a trailer also dropped, providing insight into the upcoming Universes Beyond crossover sets.

Featured in the ad is a child under a makeshift blanket tent reading what looks like the first edition of Marvel’s Voices: X-Men, which was released in August. The boy is then shown holding Mjolnir and Captain America’s shield. And then, out of one of the boy’s comic books drops an MTG card that is picked up by his mother. Sadly, only the backside of the card is shown.

This isn’t the first time WotC and Hasbro have revealed future sets, with a list of Magic and Universes Beyond sets getting released in August that featured names for every MTG set through the year 2026. Only two of the sets slated to drop in 2025 had names then: Innistrad Remastered and Final Fantasy. The rest were given code names.

The code name “Volleyball” stands out the most to me, as it was described by WotC as having a science fiction space opera theme. Naturally, when I hear space opera, I think of Star Wars, but it could also include a wide range of Marvel comic book characters.

Both Marvel and Star Wars have TCG products like Star Wars Unlimited and Marvel is expanding into the CCG space through Marvel Snap.

No set names or products of the MTG Universes Beyond crossover with Marvel were revealed at time of writing but are expected to drop closer to the launch dates in 2025.
