How to grab an opponent in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Send 'em flying.

If you’re facing off against a defensive player in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate who won’t stop shielding, it might be a good idea to learn how to grab them.

Grabbing is a basic move in your toolset that you can use to combo moves. Grabbing is also helpful because it can be used against a shielding opponent to deal massive damage.

Characters like Incineroar and King K. Rool have powerful grab attacks, so if you’re picking these fighters, it’s definitely worth learning how to grab opponents to help you become a better player.

To grab, all you need to do is press the Shield button as if you were tapping an attack button to execute a grab while near an opponent. The standard button for shielding is R on a Switch controller and the Z button on a GameCube controller, but you can set it to whatever you want through the game’s customization options.

You can also grab an opponent while shielding yourself and then pressing the A button. This should allow you to block a move and then create a quick counter play off of it.

You can then press A to deal damage to foes while they’re grabbed. You can also tilt the controller in any direction to send them flying or perform a grapple move.
