Fortnite is finally back on iOS devices after 4-year absence—but only in select locations

The war between Epic Games and Apple seems to have come to a close, at least for those living in the European Union.

Earlier this year, Epic Games said that Fortnite would return to iOS in the future, but did not give a specific release date, and that the game would only be available to download in the E.U. Now, Epic Games has confirmed the battle royale game is now downloadable through their Epic Games Store app within the region. Fortnite is also available to download on Android through the app, though that device doesn’t seem to have the regional restrictions that iOS has. Those who log into the game through the mobile app will get the chance to get the Katalina Outfit.

The return of Fortnite to iOS comes four years after Apple pulled the game from their digital stores after disputes with Epic Games over payment methods. When the company implemented a direct payment method and discounts that would allow people to pay Epic directly rather than go through Apple, the tech giant removed the game from the App Store. This led to Epic filing a lawsuit against Apple, claiming both the game’s ban and Apple’s 30 percent commission on in-app purchases were unfair and stifled competition. Apple won in most of the lawsuit counts, but some of their practices were deemed “anti-competitive.” A similar lawsuit was filed against Google, which went more favorably in Epic Games’ favor.

For those that haven’t experienced Fortnite on their phones, installing the app doesn’t take too long so long as your phone passes through Apple’s region check to make sure those downloading are actually in the E.U. The wait has been long, but with a new Marvel-themed season out now, E.U. players may find it to be worth it. Let’s hope U.S. players will be able to get Fortnite back on their phones in the future soon.
