TSM’s Tweek on why he’s not happy with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or its pro scene

TSM signed Gavin “Tweek” Despsey at the start of the year after an impressive start to life in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate scene. He’s won titles at Frostbite and Glitch 6 and has been, for the most part, one of the top competitors for some time now with a string of high placings.

All the game time, however, seems to have an adverse effect on him as he recently opened up on social media about his problems with the game and the scene as a whole.

“I overall dislike the gameplay [in Ultimate],” Tweek said on Twitter. “Things are too unreactable/unpunishable. Everything is just so safe.”

To Tweek, the game feels campy and defensive. But there are some positives, he said. He likes a handful of characters and how every character feels a lot faster and viable to previous versions of the game.

But beyond that, it was more frustration, including over pro play. “Everyone is so afraid to commit because everything is so safe and unreactable,” he said. “I rarely see anything ‘cool’ especially in tournament play. This doesn’t irk me too much because I’m a competitor and I play to win, but still, I love smash and I hate that this game can be really boring.”

Tweek’s statement has fueled some good discussion about the game in the community that Nintendo might want to look at for future patches. Most responses on the Smash Bros. reddit have been pretty positive from the community, with most users praising Tweek for being honest about his feelings. Most fans also agree with many of his points, including how characters like Pichu are strong because of their tinier hitboxes, making them harder to hit.

With Evo coming up in the next few months, it remains to be seen if Tweek can rekindle his love for the game.
