Starfield: How to complete the Overdesigned mission

Your ship depends on your choices.

After finishing the All That Money Can Buy mission in your Starfield adventures, Walter Stroud then assigns you the Overdesigned sidequest, which allows you to influence the blossoming design of his company’s new ship.

This short questline rewards you with the ship you create; however, your decisions directly affect the rewards, which include 200 EXP, a number of credits relative to your level, and either the Kepler R or the Kepler S.

Stroud’s project team has hit a roadblock as everyone involved, from the project leader to the head engineer, all have different ideas of what the ship should be. It is up to you to create a unified vision, whether that be ignoring or incorporating everyone’s different ideas.

Here is our guide on how to complete the Overdesigned quest in Starfield.

Overdesigned Quest Walkthrough in Starfield

1) Find Jules at Stroud-Ecklund Space Station

To kick off the mission, head to the Stroud-Ecklund Space Station on Deepala’s moon, Dalvik, in the Nairon Star System. You can find it near Sol and Alpha Centauri. When you get there, head to the conference room and chat with the boss, Jules. You’ll notice the team isn’t too excited to work with you, but they’ll all listen to your choices about the design.

2) Speak to Jules and pick a budget

Jules presents two options: a basic or a larger budget. Your choice determines your reward: the Kepler S for the basic or the Kepler R for the larger. To get the bigger budget, you’ll need to persuade Jules, which requires passing a test with six persuasion points. Consider enhancing your Persuasion Skill for this.

3) Speak to other members in the conference room

Discuss the ship’s design with the five team members. Your feedback influences the ship’s outcome. For the Kepler R Ship, respond positively. Ella Chaudhry envisions a long-jump ship, while Nev desires one with a large crew.

4) Complete a passenger or bounty mission

Next up, head to the mission board to do some bounties for market research. Jules says the more bounties you finish, the cooler your ship will be. However, you only really need to do two. Any two will do.

The board has all sorts of missions, from moving workers around to battling Crimson Fleet ships. My tip? Go for transport missions. They’re quick and simple. The passengers are already on your ship, so just fast-travel to where they need to go.

5) Speak to Jules again

Once you’re done, go back and see Jules. Jules will appreciate your hard work and suggest you share the news with Walter Stroud. So, make your way to the Lodge, chat with Walter, finish up the quest, and get ready to enjoy your shiny new ship.

Kepler R vs Kepler S: Which is the best ship?

Kepler S in Starfield

The Kepler S is generally the better ship that you can get from this quest chain. This is a much more focused design with superior stats in the three core systems to select, whether that be engine, shields, weapon systems, or the grav drive. Though the Kepler S may be lacking in some areas, such as weapons, you can always upgrade and outfit the ship with better components at any ship technician.

Kepler S stats

  • Value: 176240
  • Mass: 1474
  • Fuel: 2800
  • Hull: 689
  • Cargo Capacity: 3200
  • Shielded Capacity: 0
  • Class: Class B 18
  • Crew: 3
  • Jump: 27 LY
  • Shield: 570
  • Weapons: None

Comparatively, the Kepler R is a much more rounded ship that can serve a wider variety of purposes, though none of its stats are particularly impressive. No matter which ship you are after however, you must make very specific choices in the Overdesigned mission.

Kepler R stats

  • Value: 433570
  • Mass: 2642
  • Fuel: 2800
  • Hull: 999
