How to get Deterministic Chaos in Destiny 2

Lightfall's Heavy Machine Gun, explained.

Destiny 2 Lightfall has finally been released, bringing players tons of new content, an entirely new set of campaign missions, and a series of unique weapons. The expansion also added several flavorful Exotics, from a Strand sidearm to a Heavy glaive and even a machine gun that debuffs targets with its cadenced fire, the Deterministic Chaos.

This heavy machine gun can be a force to be reckoned with. Deterministic Chaos will weaken targets every fourth shot of its 360rpm fire, and every 16th shot will make targets Volatile. The weapon opens up possibilities for applying Void debuffs and makes for an interesting, unique Exotic.

If you are an avid heavy weapon user in Destiny 2, you surely will not want to miss your chance to obtain the Deterministic Chaos. If you are looking to add this weapon to your arsenal in Lightfall, here’s what you need to do.

Where to get the Deterministic Chaos in Destiny 2 Lightfall

If you want to obtain Deterministic Chaos in Lightfall, you’ll need to engage with one of the lengthiest post-campaign quests in Lightfall. The Unfinished Business quest kicks off after you end the campaign, but it takes a while until you can actually finish it.

The task will first ask you to collect Cipher Qubits, which drop in droves in the Vex Incursion Zone (marked on your map by a series of neon strings). After obtaining enough qubits, you’ll need to extract Rohan’s data by interacting with Cloud Accretions, Neomuna’s destination resource.

The fourth step in Unfinished Business points you towards Maya’s Retreat (yes, that Maya Sundaresh), a cave just off the coast of Límíng Harbor. Head to the area marked on your HUD if you’re tracking the quest, then survive a Vex offensive until you can steal the data packet. Return to Nimbus and Osiris, then head to your next assignment in the Thrilladrome Lost Sector in Límíng Harbor. Loot the final chest, then wreak havoc in Ahimsa Park by defeating enemies. Abilities advance the meter more quickly.

Once you’re done, head inside the Typhon Imperator, Calus’ ship parked just by Ahimsa Park. Follow your quest marker to reach the designated area (which you entered during the campaign), then steal a Seed of Silver Wing.

The final step before you can obtain Deterministic Chaos is the What Remains mission, which takes you through the Black Garden and from top to bottom of the Garden of Salvation raid. You’ll unlock Deterministic Chaos during that mission, but you’ll need to finish the quest and wrap up the storyline for some character development for Nimbus.

Deterministic Chaos parts and intrinsic perks in Destiny 2 Lightfall

Like all weapons in Destiny 2, Deterministic Chaos comes with a set of perks and parts that alter its behavior. Since it’s a regular Exotic, though, its rolls are fixed. Here’s what Deterministic Chaos rolls with by default:

  • Vexadecimal – Every fourth Heavy Metal projectile causes enemy to be volatile.
  • Heavy Metal – Every fourth bullet becomes a heavy projectile that causes enemies to be weakened.
  • Ricochet Rounds – Bullets from the Deterministic Chaos ricochet off surfaces.
  • Polygonal Rifling – Reduces recoil and improves stability.
  • Composite Stock – Increases handling speed and stability.

The star of Deterministic Chaos’ functioning is the combination of Heavy Metal and Vexadecimal, its two unique traits. Every fourth bullet becomes a Heavy Metal round, which will apply a Void-based Weaken effect to its target. With Vexadecimal, however, every fourth Heavy Metal bullet (meaning every 16th shot) will also cause enemies to be volatile.

Thanks to its 48-round magazine and its 360rpm fire rate, Deterministic Chaos can do some decent damage to bosses, especially after machine guns received some tweaks in Lightfall. Even if you don’t take it to a Grandmaster, however, Deterministic Chaos is certainly a unique weapon that’s worth adding to your inventory. And if you don’t want to use it, it’s still a free Pinnacle drop for your Heavy slot.
