Today was supposed to mark the beginning of a new year of Call of Duty esports, but unforeseen circumstances have caused a week long delay.
The Call of Duty World League is postponed until next week due to “issues beyond our control,” the League stated last night. Competitions in all regions won’t begin until Jan. 12.
While the league wasn’t more specific with what those issues really were, one possibility may be last night’s Playstation Network outage. The network was down for about 10 hours, with some speculating that the outage may last through Thursday. That kind of disruption of service would make it impossible to host matches, and when you’re kicking off the entire World League with your first set of regular season matches, it’s prudent to avoid any potential pitfalls.
So that leaves us with another week to wait for the start of the World League regular season, where the top 12 teams in North America, ten teams in Europe, and eight teams in Australia and New Zealand will compete in their own seasons to determine the best Call of Duty teams in their regions and eventually, the World.
