New characters, modes, and content were all revealed to get players hyped for the game’s launch on Dec. 7. Nintendo also plans to show off more about the game on Treehouse Live shortly after the Direct concludes on Twitch. Treehouse Live is a show created by Nintendo that shows off upcoming games in greater detail.

Incineroar and Ken confirmed as new characters

Incineroar from the Pokémon series and Street Fighter’s Ken were revealed as two brand-new characters coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

New amiibo revealed

King K. Rool and Ice Climbers are the next amiibo to come out after Ridley, Wolf, and Inkling Girl. Both are set to become available in February 2019.

New mode, Spirits, revealed

The game won’t include trophies to collect this time around, but instead, it’s getting a new mode called Spirits where you can equip characters not in the game to unlock additional skills.

You get new spirits by taking part in battles against NPC characters. The goal is to collect as many spirits as possible by completing unique challenges.

Local wireless and online play

Online matches will now be matchmade, putting together players of similar skills or preferences. If you ask to have a game with no rules, you’ll be matched up with players who want no rules as well.

Matchmaking will also prioritize players closer together to reduce lag. Nintendo asks players to try to play the game on a LAN connection if possible.

Elite Battles

If you get enough points, you’ll be invited to take part in Elite Battles to duke it out against some of the best players in the world.

New Assist Trophies debunk Grinch rumor

Isaac and Shadow were some of the many new Assist Trophies shown off during the Direct, killing off the recent “leak” claiming that the duo would be joining the main roster.

New characters like Street Fighter’s Guile, the Squid Sisters, and Spring Man from ARMS bring the total amount of Assist Trophies to 59.

We’re getting new fighters as DLC

Five new characters will be DLC fighters in the future. This includes Piranha Plant, who will be a free limited-time fighter for those who purchase the game early.

Story Mode teaser

We got a small glimpse into the game’s future story mode, as well as how characters became Spirits.  It looks like all of the main characters get taken away, leaving Kirby alone to save everyone.

You’ll need to take on evil versions of characters on your quest to get to the end and save the world.
