New missions in League of Legends coincide with the release of a new interactive Runeterra map.

There will be 11 missions total, with 10 asking players to win a game as, with, or against a champion from a certain region. It seems more missions will be revealed each day, as only the Mount Targon, Noxus, and Ionia faction missions are available at the moment. By completing a faction mission, players will also earn an icon for that region.

Once players finish all 10 regional missions, they will also complete the final one, which rewards players with an icon of Runeterra and a Key Fragment.

Overall the new missions seem to be filler material until the Pool Party event drops on Aug. 2. Despite this, to better promote the game’s lore, they still could have been tied in more with the new map. Currently, the missions have no relation to the map other than asking players to pick certain champions. The new graphic is not promoted at all, making the in-game rewards feel disjointed and out of place.

That being said, Riot Games’ continued emphasis on lore-based events is a good way to get veterans and new players alike interested in the game. Connecting players to the larger narrative behind League fosters a more personal bond with champions, as players become more invested in each backstory. The recent Pyke event highlights this, and we hope Riot continues to make the game about more than just fighting on Summoner’s Rift.

Players will have two weeks to complete all the missions.
