A Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct is coming on Aug. 8

Nintendo teased the announcement during the Melee grand finals.

Just before the Evo 2018 Super Smash Bros. Melee finals, Nintendo dropped a bombshell on the fans in attendance.

A brand-new Nintendo Direct, Nintendo’s main livestream video series that announces new information about upcoming games, has been revealed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Direct will take place on Aug. 8 and will be streamed on Nintendo’s Twitch account.

Not much is known about what the Direct will have to offer. When the game was first revealed at E3, Nintendo noted that it would include 66 characters at launch—but only 65 have been revealed at this time, with the last being Ridley. This has led some to believe that a new character reveal could be on the horizon.

Another possibility, however, is that Nintendo will just show off more about the game, such as any single-player content, modes, stages, or other events that could be coming.

Nintendo has been hosting Ultimate exhibition matches at Evo this year, and the company even had the game on offer for attendees to try out. The version of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was the same as the E3 build from July.

A Nintendo announcement had been rumored to be on the main stage during the Melee finals, but instead, the company decided to tease an event that’s coming in the next few days.

The Evo crowd wasn’t entirely pleased with the announcement, though. Like a lot of FGC fans, the crowd was looking for Nintendo to drop the news at Evo rather than holding a separate event.

Evo hosted two Smash Bros. tournaments at this year’s event: The GameCube title Super Smash Bros. Melee and the Wii U title Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Bharat “Lima” Chintapall was crowned the Wii U champion yesterday, while TSM’s William “Leffen” Hjelte won the Melee finals.
