A new skin will soon be joining League of Legends that will separate fans of a certain mid lane time-bending champion from the superfans—and it’s likely to stir up even more discontent among players.
Keeping with the theme of in-game bands to celebrate the annual World Championship, Riot Games is not only welcoming the new HEARTSTEEL skins to the Rift but also a new Mythic Variant—this time in the form of Breakout True Damage Ekko, who rocked the stage just a few years ago. This is now the second Mythic Variant released in League following Dark Cosmic Erasure Jhin a few months ago, which sparked massive controversy within the community due to its high price tag.
This new skin type has been explained as an attempt to give a “deeper thematic lens” to existing Legendary skins, though they cannot be obtained through direct purchase, rerolling skin shards, or opening chests, capsules, or grab bags of any kind. Instead, Mythic Variants have a very, very small chance of dropping from specified event capsules. Otherwise, players will get them guaranteed upon opening 30 capsules—costing nearly $200 to obtain.
In a new developer post today, Riot 100 pc nuggets, the product lead for the skins team, admitted that Dark Cosmic Erasure Jhin had fallen short of players’ expectations in terms of differentiation from the original skin and said the team placed more time and effort into Breakout True Damage Ekko. This Mythic Variant includes updated visual effects complete with dark blue and golden accents, as well as changes to some of the aspects of his recall and sound effects to fit the new hip hop/piano focus this skin sets out to portray.
Players who purchase the event capsules will be rewarded with bonus items based on how many they have purchased in the track of 30, now including Mythic Essence. Music grab bags will appear after opening specific amounts of capsules that contain skins based on League’s many musical groups.
Breakout True Damage Ekko is expected to be available for testing on League’s PBE in the next few days. While a specific release date on the official servers has not yet been revealed, players should expect it—as well as the associated event capsules—to be added to the game alongside the HEARTSTEEL skins with Patch 13.22 on Nov. 8.
