  • Hint one: A kidney, for example.
  • Hint two: Rearrange the chemical element Argon.
  • Hint three: “Mouth” is another type of this word.
  • Hint four: It ends with “N.”

That’s all I can give you in terms of clues, so if you need more, I may as well give you the answer.

The solution is “ORGAN,” as in a Pipe or Pump Organ instrument—typically large instruments with great aesthetics and design that bellow out loud and powerful notes.

Also, a kidney is a type of organ, Argon is an anagram of an organ, and in addition to pipe and pump organs, you can also have a mouth organ.

‘Pipe or pump instrument’ NYT Mini Crossword difficulty rating

I don’t think “pump organ” is commonly uttered, but I’ve heard “pipe organ” mentioned a few times in my lifetime. If you’ve ever set foot in a church or cathedral, chances are you’ve been privy to the grandeur of a pipe organ, too. I’m going to go with a simple two out of five rating for this clue as I don’t think it’s too difficult, but there’s enough room for doubt to avoid a one.
