There’s an Overwatch cameo in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One

Plenty of other pop culture references show up, too.

Activision Blizzard isn’t yet ready to put together an Overwatch film, despite the game’s massive popularity. But one Overwatch hero is about to make her silver screen debut.

A trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, which is based on a book of the same name, debuted over the weekend. The trailer shows life both in and out of the OASIS, the virtual reality world of Ready Player One, as a battle rages for the world’s control. And there’s one surprising cameo in the trailer: Overwatch’s British pilot, Tracer.

Tracer is part of a large group of pop culture heroes charging forward on what looks to be a battlefield. You’ll find her right next to Street Fighter’s Chun-Li. Likewise, Freddy Krueger, a Gundam figher, and the Iron Giant also appear in the newest trailer.

Tracer is one of Overwatch’s most recognizable heroes—after all, she is the face of the game. The time-traveling pilot represents everything Overwatch is about for Blizzard. She’s spunky, quick, and colorful. Just under a year ago, Tracer was also revealed to be Overwatch’s first openly queer character. As the face of Overwatch, it was a big step forward for queer visibility in video games.

Blizzard has already immortalized the hero with an action figure, a Nendoroid toy, and a statue—a movie cameo seems like the next logical step.
