If you unlock a character in another manner, the chain continues. So if you unlock Villager in the World of Light Adventure Mode, beating Classic Mode with Pikachu will instead unlock Shulk.

If you fail to beat the new challenger after Classic Mode comes to an end, you’ll need to wait a bit to have another shot at adding the character to your roster.
