Magic: The Gathering is changing how cards are introduced into the Modern format with the upcoming set, Modern Horizons.
The set will contain 239 cards, made up of a mix of reprints not eligible in the Modern format and new cards. Due to release on June 13, Magic: The Gathering is revealing cards from Modern Horizons every day during the last week of May, with the most recent being a couple of uncommon cards named Goblin Matron and Firebolt.
Goblin Matron
Harkening back to the days of Turbo Zoo, Modern Goblin decks have the potential to end a game by turn three or four. Goblin Matron can ensure this, even though it costs three mana (one red) to cast.
“When Goblin Matron enters the battlefield, you may search your library for a Goblin card, reveal that card, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library,” the card reads.
Put Goblin Matron on the battlefield and search for any Goblin card in your library like Goblin Grenade, Mogg War Marshal, or Reckless Bushwhacker. Throw in a few lightning strikes and maybe a Firebolt and the match is won.
Firebolt
Costing one red mana, Firebolt deals two damage to any target. It’s similar to shock, except Firebolt also has a Flashback cost of five mana (one red). This allows a player to cast from the graveyard.
For one mana, the ability to take out two creatures in Modern is priceless. The entire format is about being fast and cheap, which makes Firebolt a worthy addition.
Modern Horizons is set to release on June 13 and hit local game stores for pre-release on June 8 and 9.
