Ever wanted to know what it’s like to analyze the game like a League of Legends pro?
Team Liquid offered a unique look into the thought process behind analysis in the world’s biggest esports last night with “A Lesson with Liquid`Quas,” a flash quiz game placing players in the shoes of their indomitable top laner, Diego “Quas” Ruiz, attending a daily analysis session with the team’s analyst.
Team Liquid’s head analyst Mark Zimmerman grills Ruiz, and by proxy the player, on a number of in-game situations from the second game of Cloud 9 and Samsung Galaxy Blue’s match from last year’s Riot World Championship.
The flash game lays out a specific in-game situation from the match and tasks the player to channel Ruiz’s League knowledge and answer the question. Questions range from what objective Cloud9 should take to specific instances of micro actions.
The game includes a soothing soundtrack to keep you focused while deciding on your course of action, but the real finishing touch is Ruiz’s quips after a successful answer—“Yeeaaaah, baby.”
If you picked “Push Mid,” you were right, according to Zimmerman. Making too big of a rotation would leave the team too vulnerable to Twisted Fate respawning and using his global ultimate, Destiny, to turn the engage in Samsung’s favor. Pushing mid denies Twisted Fate farm, building off the mid lane advantage.
I got 8 of 10 questions right on my first try, so I have a little ways to go before becoming a professional analyst.
It’s a fun and unique way to introduce League of Legends analysis, a very opaque area of esports organizations, to the masses, giving a little insight into the thought process that goes into League of Legends, both on the Summoner’s Rift and off it.
