Liquid break the 6-way tie for third place in the NA LCS by defeating CLG

Liquid put on a good showing in their win over CLG today during week two of the NA LCS Summer Split—but they still don’t look quite as good as they did at the end of the spring.

Although CLG already look better than they did last split, they’re still far from playing like a top-tier team, even in this unpredictable meta where historically they’ve excelled. That being said, the fact that Liquid struggled against them until about 20 minutes into the game isn’t a great sign, even if they did pull away after one big fight to take the win.

The strangest part of this game was that both team comps were extremely not-strange. Both teams had traditional bot lane carries with supports, and the top lane and jungle were filled with champs such as Ornn, Singed, Trundle, and Sejuani. The only pick that could be seen as weird is maybe Eugene “Pobelter” Park taking Irelia into the mid lane, but that’s been a common choice since her large scale update earlier this year.

Although CLG lost, the team’s fans shouldn’t be too disheartened. They put up a great fight, and held onto a gold lead for a good portion of the game. It wasn’t until that one big teamfight, which ultimately allowed Liquid to grab a Baron, that their odds seemed bad. With that Baron, though, Liquid’s gold lead shot from about 1,500 to around 10,000, and CLG’s chances went out the window.

Liquid now sit behind undefeated teams Echo Fox and TSM with a 2-1 record, but they’ve at least broken their tie for third with five other teams in the league—Cloud9, CLG, Golden Guardians, OpTic, and Clutch Gaming. Liquid will be put to the test tomorrow, though, against TSM at around 4pm CT.
