Content creators condemn Riot’s new-look esports platform

The removal of pro match histories will affect most third party stats and data sites, including most well-known wikis.

Riot Games’ esports platform, lolesports, received a makeover for the 2019 season. It’s being integrated with the League of Legends blog platform Nexus and receiving its own new watch page. Lolesports was certainly in need of an update, and the new look is sleek, but there’s one thing missing—match histories of each pro league around the world.

Notable creators in the League space that use those match histories for their own products, such as Rheingold River at Leaguepedia and the team behind the well-known post-match threads in the League Reddit community, have spoken out about the change.

People like River, the post-match Reddit team, and most other third party stats sites for pro League matches rely on the lolesports match history pages to gather data and information in real time for their products. Without it, according to River, it will be “impossible” for anything to remain updated in real time. And some things may not be updated or posted at all.

In the top-voted comment on River’s Reddit post condemning the change, Reddit user epicxkidzorz, one of the creators on Reddit’s post-match team, said that those match histories made the team’s lives “significantly easier.” More comments on the thread chimed in to plead with Riot to reinstate the feature on the new lolesports platform.

In an edit on the post, River clarified that Riot claimed it would be reinstating it at some point, citing a Q&A posted by Riot on the Nexus blog earlier this month. In the Q&A, Riot said the official match history team is still trying to figure out how to approach the feature for 2019, and that there would be an update to share later this year.
