All you could see were bouncing blue ears above a standing ovation as 17-year-old Dominique “Sonic Fox” McLean overcame a loser’s bracket deficit to win the Evo 2015Â Mortal Kombat XÂ championship.
The teen landed his second marquee title in just over two weeks despite a shaky performance on day one against teammate Tim “Honeybee” Commandeur.
Day two, however, was anything but shaky.
McLean made short work of Yomi Gaming’s Terry “MIT” Malik and “DJT,” piloting both Kitana and Erron Black to runaway victories. The prodigy then bested Commandeur in the rematch before winning six games to two against runner-up “Foxy Grampa.”
While set one of the grand final against the British Kung Lao player was contentious, the second was anything but. McLean struggled to keep Kung Lao at bay with Kitana’s projectiles, eventually switching to the character that made him a household name: Erron Black.
It was all downhill from there.Â
For his work, McLean nets a hefty chunk of Evo’s prize pool, which received a $50,000 boost in June thanks to Warner Bros. and NetherRealm studios. More importantly for the young player, his title of “world’s best” remains undoubtedly secure.
