Microsoft Introduces Cross-Platform Gaming

Gamers will now be able to play the same game on different platforms together.

After years of bickering and pleading, video gamers have gotten one of their most prominent wishes granted.  During Microsoft’s Windows 10 press conference on Wednesday, Xbox head Phil Spencer shared the company’s vision of gaming occurring on a cross-platform basis; incorporating both the Xbox One and the PC.

“We think enabling people to play multiplayer games on Windows 10, across Xbox One and Windows 10, will unlock the potential of Xbox Live and grow social network that’s there today,” Spencer said.

With the cross-platform idea announced, the first game that will support this is Fable: Legends, the newest installment of Lionhead-developed adventure games. While the series is already extremely popular among both Xbox One and PC gamers, the cross-platform functionality will bring a new facet of gamer that will be able to socialize with their friends and meet new peers on a different platform.

“Over the last 13 years, Xbox has been focused on creating and expanding great gaming and entertainment experiences on console,” said Spencer. “We’re incredibly proud of the Xbox One and are fully committed to ensuring it’s the best place to play console games in 2015 and beyond.”

Another interesting announcement that Microsoft made during their conference was regarding the upgrading process from previous Windows. Any Windows customers with Windows 7 and upward will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for the first year for free. This exciting announcement will incentivize Windows customers who have not yet made the switch to upgrade now and benefit from all of the new features of Microsoft 10.

“Now, we are also bringing that same focus, passion, and commitment to gaming on Windows 10, enhancing the PC games and gaming devices you already love, including the Xbox One.  We’ve listened and learned from our past efforts in PC gaming and I am excited about what the future holds,” said Spencer.

Alongside the fact that Xbox One will be able to stream on Windows 10 devices, it is apparent that Microsoft is making a strong push for more and more connection between their platforms.  Fable: Legends may be the first step for the cross-platform accessibility between the Xbox One and PC, but there is no telling what Microsoft could embark upon to further their expansion.
