Gamescom—the massive annual game industry show that takes place in Cologne, Germany—wrapped up its Opening Night Live show today. The two hour-long event was filled with new game reveals, trailers, release dates, and surprises from the over 500 companies signed up to show off their latest and greatest projects. If you’re interested in seeing what the future of gaming will hold, you’ve come to the right place.
Here’s everything that was announced during the Gamescom 2022 Opening Night Live event.
2:55pm CT: Dead Island 2 announced for February 2023
Fans are finally getting the sequel to Dead Island. This gory zombie game received a cinematic trailer and a gameplay trailer that showed off a dire setting—and lots and lots of blood. If bodily explosions are your thing, Dead Island 2 is your kind of game. Fans have been waiting a long time for the game, but the game is coming just a few months from now on Feb. 3, 2023.
2:50pm CT: New look at The Outlast Trials
The Outlast Trials, a gruesome horror game, received a world premiere trailer today. It looks like a mix of survival-horror and action inside a mysterious facility as the player attempts to escape. Developer Red Barrels revealed that there will be a closed beta available for players from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1. The game can be wishlisted now on Steam.
2:48pm CT: Dorf Romantik headed to Switch
Made by four students in Germany, Dorf Romantik releases on Nintendo Switch on Sept. 29. This game has overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam and is great for those who want a peaceful strategy and puzzle game to keep their minds occupied. Create beautiful and growing villages in this city-builder. Now you can take it on the go by purchasing it on the Switch.

2:44pm CT: More info on Blacktail
Twin sisters set out on an adventure in this bow-and-arrow shooter. With a beautiful sprawling world in front of them, they’ll have to defeat enemies while they take in the gorgeous scenery around them. The game comes out this winter. but has no solid release date, and will release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
2:42pm CT: Warhammer 40,000: Darktide
A sprawling city, a reject, and a lot of monsters is what players will see in Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, an upcoming first-person shooter. Up to four players can play in a strike team and plow through enemies together. The game comes out Nov. 30, 2022.
2:40pm CT: Park Beyond world premiere
This theme park-building and management sim received a world-premiere trailer today. Players will be able to design and build the theme park of their dreams, from roller coasters to concessions stands, to decorations and more. The game is developed by Limbic Entertainment and Bandai Namco, and will be available in 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
2:35pm CT: Brain Structure, an upcoming podcast by Hideo Kojima
Hideo Kojima—who has been appearing at gaming showcases, dropping the smallest bit of news—has done just that again when he announced his new podcast starting Sept. 8. The program will include special guests from various fields. There’s no word on what games he’s working on, though.
2:32pm CT: Where Winds Meet announced
The open-world adventure RPG Where Winds Meet was developed by Everstone Games and received a world premiere announcement today. It features martial arts combat and is set during China’s Northern Song Dynasty. It looks like a mix of Ghost of Tsushima and Assassin’s Creed with a martial arts focus.
2:30pm CT: New Gotham Knights trailer
Gotham Knights is releasing a little earlier than folks expected. In a post-Batman world, the rest of his crew has to protect the streets of Gotham. In this new trailer for the game, fans got a look at some new characters, including Harley Quinn, and the release date for the game. Gotham Knights is releasing Oct. 21, 2022.
2:27pm CT: Age of Empires IV: Ottomans and Malians free DLC announced
The upcoming Age of Empires IV: Ottomans and Malians update will allow players to traverse new campaigns as world leaders from the Ottoman Empire. It will be available for free to all Age of Empires IV players on Oct. 25 as part of the game’s anniversary. Find it on PC Game Pass and Steam.
2:25pm CT: Wyrdsong announced
There was very little info released about the newest RPG, Wyrdsong, out of Something Wicked Games besides the game’s reveal. Fans don’t even know what platforms it will be on or when it’s coming out, but it sure looks cool.
2:23pm CT: Scars Above
This sci-fi action-adventure game received a world premiere trailer today. Developed by Prime Matter and Mad Head Games, players will be able to explore an alien world and the cosmos around them to discover why aliens are interested in the human race. The game doesn’t have a release date yet, but it will be coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
2:20pm CT: Killer Klowns From Outer Space revealed
A new horror RPG from the Killer Klowns movie is coming in early 2023 in early access. This multiplayer horror game from the Friday the 13th director has a beta that fans can sign up for now. Those interested will be able to play on Steam, PS4, PS5, and Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles.
2:17pm CT: The Expanse: A Telltale Series release window unveiled
Developers Telltale Games and Deck Nine are working on this story-driven title, which is based on the Prime Video TV show The Expanse. A developer interview and pre-alpha footage gave fans more insight into what it took to adapt a TV show and the role players will be able to take on in this sci-fi thriller. They also announced a release window: Summer 2023.
2:10pm CT: New High on Life trailer
Fans of the Rick and Morty franchise might recognize a few voices, including the one that comes from the gun that does a lot of the talking in High On Life. If you’ve ever enjoyed your weapon narrating your game in a very raunchy way, this game might be for you. It will be released on Dec. 13, 2022. Maybe keep your kids away from it, though.
2:07pm CT: Honkai: Star Rail
Developer miHoYo gave players a glimpse of one of its new games, Honkai Star Rail. It shares the same art style as Genshin Impact but with a new premise: Take a train to space in this new epic adventure.
2:05pm CT: Genshin Impact 3.0 update previewed
Developer miHoYo showed off the 3.0 update for Genshin Impact, which launches tomorrow, Aug. 24. Players will be able to check out new environments, including the new nation of Sumeru, and new Dendro characters. The update will go live for all players tomorrow, with new places to explore and mysteries to solve.
2:02pm CT: New Homeworld 3 gameplay
Fans of this long-standing franchise received new information about Homeworld 3. Fans got a peek of some of the gameplay elements as well as some of the game’s background story. There’s no release date for the game yet, but the developers pointed to the first half of 2023 as a release window. Homeworld 3 will release on the Epic Games Store and Steam.
2:01pm CT: Atlas Fallen world premiere
This world premiere trailer for the newly announced game Atlas Fallen showed off a desert world inhabited by large monsters. The cinematic showed characters traversing the desert with some kind of sliding mechanic and fighting off large monsters with weapons and powers. The game will release in 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC and is available to wishlist now.
1:59pm CT: Stranded Alien Dawn announcement
Viewers got a first look at Stranded Alien Dawn, what looks like a survival game with some elements of crafting and gathering, in a new world premiere. Currently, the game is set to release in October, and it looks like the game will be a PC exclusive. Those interested can wishlist it on Steam now.
1:57pm CT: World premiere of Lies of P
This classics-inspired action-adventure game Lies of P sees Pinocchio fighting through a steampunk-style world in an attempt to save his town. The game will be available in 2023 on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. It will also be available on Game Pass on day one.
1:50pm CT: Friends vs Friends
In its world premiere, Friends vs Friends, an action card game, has a hand-drawn feel to it, and players will be able to manage their cards and play with their friends. There’s no additional information about the game, besides that early access is coming soon.
1:46pm CT: Moonbreaker
From fantasy author Brandon Sanderson and Unknown Worlds, the developer behind Subnautica, comes Moonbreaker, a new sci-fi strategy game. Players can paint their own miniature figures in-game before releasing them on fantastic battlefields to fight enemies. The game has a bright and colorful tabletop aesthetic. It will be available in early access on Sept. 29, 2022.
1:44pm CT: Return to Monkey Island release date unveiled
The release date for the highly-anticipated sequel to the classic franchise, Return to Monkey Island, finally got revealed at Gamescom. The game launches Sept. 19 on international Talk Like A Pirate day. Pre-orders are live now and will fans get a bonus for doing so.
1:42pm CT: Goat Simulator 3 in-game footage previewed
Mix chaos and goats for another zany adventure in the expansive Goat Simulator 3 universe. Fans got their first glimpse at in-game footage for the goat simulator at Gamescom. The game will release on Nov. 17 and is available for pre-order now. It’s developed by Coffee Stain North, and platforms include PC via the Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5.
1:40pm CT: Under the Waves announcement
Under the Waves, a new game coming in 2023, takes players underwater. Not much else was revealed about the game, so those who enjoyed the scenery and concept will need to wait a bit before they get any more info about it.
1:38pm CT: Sonic Frontiers release date revealed
A new trailer for Sonic Frontiers combined gameplay and cinematics, and shows Sonic facing off against new enemies in an attempt to rescue a captured Amy. The game mixes exploration, speed, and combat in a new open-world setting. Sega confirmed the release date for Sonic Frontiers to be Nov. 8.
1:35pm CT: Dying Light 2: Stay Human DLC: Bloody Ties
Dying Light 2 is getting a story DLC involving a gladiatorial arena, which will be available for all platforms. Available Oct. 13, pre-orders for the DLC are now open now. Pre-orders come with the Aristocrat Pack, which will be available on Sept. 6.
1:33pm CT: New Tales from the Borderlands
New characters, new story, the same franchise everyone loves. Coming Oct. 21 this year to all platforms, fans got a new trailer for New Tales from the Borderlands that showed off some of those new features. Fans will have to wait a little longer to see some gameplay footage, but they won’t have to wait long to get the game in their hands since it releases in just a few months.
1:28pm CT: Moving Out 2 announced, new Hogwarts Legacy trailer
Moving Out 2 is a sequel to Moving Out, a take on the couch co-op physics-based genre. Fling your furniture with friends in this sequel to the fun and colorful original. Moving Out 2 is coming in 2023 to Xbox Series, PS4, PS5, and PC.
Hogwarts Legacy, developed by Portkey Games, is set to release on Feb. 10, 2023. A new trailer premiered at Gamescom 2022 featuring Hogwarts students chasing and being chased by various magical monsters. Digital deluxe edition is available for preorder now and includes 72 hours early access and a variety of cosmetics.
1:25pm CT: Lords of the Fallen
Lords of the Fallen is an action-adventure title in a dark fantasy world. No release date was given, but the game received a CG trailer and is available to wishlist now on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It was originally called Lords of the Fallen 2, but the developer dropped the “2” and changed focus. Lords of the Fallen is developed by Hexworks Studio ins association with CI Games.
1:20pm CT: New Callisto Protocol trailer
New gameplay trailer shows off exploration. Existing release date is Dec. 2.
1:17pm CT: New PlayStation controller
New type of PlayStation controller available: DualSense Edge wireless controller. Highly customizable, likely intended as a competitor to Xbox’s Elite controller.
1:15pm CT: Dune: Awakening announcement
The cinematic trailer was revealed for the Dune-themed open-world survival MMO Dune: Awakening from developer Funcom in collaboration with moviemaker Legendary. Available on PS5, Series X/S, and PC. More info here, with a beta coming soon. Registration is open now.
12:26pm CT: Stage is set
Attendees are slowly filing into the Gamescom stage and getting ready for the show.
Thanks to Geoff Keighley, we have an idea of what to expect at the show. In addition to big AAA heavy-hitters like Borderlands, Genshin Impact, and Sonic Frontiers, players will be able to get a peek at titles like Goat Simulator 3 and Hogwarts Legacy. All told, over 25 games will be shown during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live.
While fans have a good idea of what will be shown, there will also likely be surprises and big reveals that aren’t widely known. Make sure to keep this page refreshed to read about everything as it happens.
