Have you ever wished that you could play some form of Overwatch in Fortnite: Battle Royale, or at least have Overwatch characters inside the game? Maybe you can, if you let your imagination flow.
Fortnite players have started comparing outfits available in the popular battle royale game to famous Overwatch characters, and some look a lot like them. What seems to have triggered the comparisons was that Fortnite developer Epic Games released the new angel outfit Ark last night, which looks a bit like Overwatch’s support hero Mercy. Both of them wear a white dress with golden armor pads and have white hair and a golden halo.

It was enough for the Fortnite subreddit to remember other Fortnite outfits that really resemble Overwatch characters. Some look incredibly alike, such as the Fortnite season four Omega outfit and cyber-ninja DPS hero Genji, the Arachne outfit and the sniper Widowmaker, and the Deadfire outfit and the cowboy McCree. A user grouped up the most interesting matches in an image.
But saying Epic copied Blizzard to any extent is a stretch. The themes of these characters and outfits are recurrent in video games and culture in general. Saying Epic copied McCree because there’s a cowboy outfit, or that they copied Bastion because there’s a robot outfit, is a nearly impossible claim. Among the former comparisons, we can even see the latest Overwatch hero Ashe compared to the Calamity Fortnite outfit, which Epic actually released before Blizzard revealed Ashe.
Deciding if a company copied another isn’t really what most players are concerned about. But noticing these similarities might add a new flavor to both games, like playing Overwatch with friends using only “Fortnite characters” or playing squads in Fortnite with Mercy, Widowmaker, Genji, and McCree.
