Twitch streamer Andy “Mexican Andy” Martin captured more than 50 Mexican migrants illegally crossing into the United States live on stream.
Andy was streaming live from Tijuana, Mexico when he came across the fencing on the beach that separates the U.S. and Mexico border. Andy approached the fencing and noticed a large group of people huddled together closer to the shoreline.
“Is that the caravan,” he asked his chat, a reference to the migrant caravan from South America that has been a frequent topic of discussion in U.S. politics.
After reaching the group at the fence, he noticed that there was a surge of people moving toward his location. A woman can be seen investigating the fencing, applying pressure to different sections in what appeared to be an attempt to find a weak spot.
Andy focused the camera back on the huddled group where he realized a man was crouched down with what seemed to be a pair of scissors, cutting away at the chain-link fencing. Suddenly, one person crawls through the hole to the other side, and everyone else began to follow.
In a dramatic scene, more than 50 migrants worked their way through the hole in the border barrier. A law enforcement SUV parked on the beach drove off toward the front of the crowd to begin detaining the migrants.
At one point, Andy’s phone blared the sounds of police sirens as he stood right next to those waiting in line to cross, thanks to a donation made by a viewer that triggered the sound effect.
Eventually, an American officer on an ATV appeared and the same SUV returned to park directly in front of the hole in the fence to hinder entry.
Andy claimed he could see some of the people who had been standing right next to him just minutes ago in the back of the vehicle. “Oh look chat, I see them, they’re all in the back,” he said. “The guy that broke through this shit, they’re in the back.”
“Andy this footage is gonna make history,” a donation read once the crossings had stopped.
While speaking to California-local news station ABC 10 about what he captured, Andy said “it’s crazy, I didn’t know this was gonna happen on livestream.”
ABC 10 reported that U.S. Border Patrol arrested 53 people from the incident and that no one got away.
An edited archive of the stream can be seen above.
