Fortnite bug may have allowed hackers access to millions of accounts, researchers say

Check Point estimates that the bug was able to be exploited since 2018.

Fortnite developer Epic Games acknowledged this week that a security flaw in the game’s system may have gave hackers access to players’ accounts, The Washington Post reported.

The bug was brought to Epic’s attention following a report constructed by information security group Check Point Research, who privately contacted the developer to notify it of the report’s findings. Epic, while saying the bug has been fixed, did not specify how many players were affected.

The bug reportedly would not only allow hackers to impersonate players using their accounts, but it also gave the hackers the ability to purchase V-Bucks on the accounts with any linked credit cards.

Check Point estimates that the bug was able to be exploited since 2018, meaning millions of players could have been affected. The group released and explained its findings in an online report, as well as a YouTube video.

V-Buck scams are not foreign to the Fortnite community, though. Epic has rolled out posts on its social media and in-game, telling players to be cautious of possible sketchy behavior. It still remains a major threat to the hundreds of millions of players who have signed up for the popular battle royale game.
