Saintvicious makes controversial statement about depression on-stream

The FlyQuest coach faces community backlash for his insensitive remark.

FlyQuest coach Brandon “Saintvicious” DiMarco was streaming some League of Legends on Friday night when he made an insensitive comment on mental health issues. Spurred on by his Twitch chat, his statement spiraled into a rant that called depression “made-up bullshit.”

This is a stunningly callous remark coming from someone who’s charged with guiding professional players, most of whom are in their early 20s. According to Riot Games’ contract database, Saintvicious is still the FlyQuest coach and is contracted through the end of the 2019 season.

This had been a pretty good time of year for League of Legends with the All-Star Event underway, Summoner’s Rift decorated in holiday spirit, and teams revealing shiny new rosters. Saintvicious’ remark casts a pall on the season and afterward, he was skewered on social media by many of his peers in the League community.

Depression and other mental illnesses are real, clinically-proven diseases that affect hundreds of millions of people worldwide. In the past, influential League community members, like popular streamer Sky Williams, have posted about their battles and encouraged those with similar feelings to seek help.

Saintvicious’ comments not only miss the mark, they can be construed as dangerous. People who suffer with depression should be encouraged to seek help both from friends and family, as well as licensed professionals who are equipped to assist them.

Update Dec. 9 1:30am CT: FlyQuest has announced Saintvicious’ resignation. The team will be coached by Gabriel “Invert” Zoltan-Johan and David “Cop” Roberson.
