For those who are playing WoW encounter this error, it’s easy to become worried. Not only won’t you be able to log into the game, but you might think there’s an issue with your character. The “Character with that name already exists” error consistently happens whenever a new patch goes live for World of Warcraft, or a new update has launched. If you’re jumping into the game for the first time after a few months, expect to see this error at least once. Thankfully, it’s merely a problem with the servers, and there’s an easy way to fix it.

This error usually occurs when a player doesn’t properly log out of a server. To fix this, you’ll need to:

  • Log into one of your different characters, then try logging out of the game properly.
  • Ensure files aren’t corrupted by resetting your user interface
  • The server might need to remove the character from the server. This occurs after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Another thing you can do to tackle this issue is to access the Battle.net support website and submit a request for technical support, or you could visit the support forums and see if anyone has another fix for the issue. This is a common error in WoW that the support team should have a good understanding of how to handle it, and should expect what to do next. The Battle.net support team will assist you with any inquiry if you contact support.

Hopefully, you’ll easily get into your WoW servers and play the character you want now. If you’re still experiencing these issues, running a fresh install of the game might be a good idea, to ensure no files went missing during the latest update.
