CD Projekt RED’s Gwent has just begun its open beta, according to an announcement on the game’s official website earlier today.
Gwent is a strategic card game that is based off the in-game card game from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt—the critically acclaimed 2015 Game of the Year. Fans of The Witcher 3 that chose to dive deep into the wide world of Gwent through various in-game tournaments, quests, and entire story-lines will be pleased to know that the standalone Gwent is almost exactly akin to the original in every way.
The design of the game has many subtle reminders of The Witcher 3 as well, such as voice-overs for tutorials and cards, the game board, card animations, and artwork. It truly feels like it was plucked right out of the world of The Witcher. The short, yet in-depth tutorial helps the game feel more beginner-friendly, and less like a stranger to those that didn’t play Gwent in the The Witcher 3.
The game also has some small differences to the original concept. The largest, surely, is that you may damage a card’s strength and lower its value, rather than just outright destroying the card as in the original. The rules are the same other than that, more or less. Finish at least two out of three rounds with a higher total strength than your opponent, and you win.
If you’d like to try out Gwent while it’s in open beta, head on over to the download page and give it a shot. The page also features how-to guides for playing the game and development news from CD Projekt RED.
