Announced at E3 2016, Quake Champions is expected to enter its closed beta period “in the coming weeks,” according to the press release. A signup page on the Quake Champions website launched this morning. Quake players have been eagerly anticipating a new entry in the series, with id Software’s last Quake title having been released in 2007 with Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

Quake Champions builds upon the series rich legacy in esports, adding multiple characters called Champions with diverse skills. But the company says these won’t inherently change the nature of Quake, id Software creative director Tim Willits told Polygon in August.

“It’s still a skill-based game, with this addition,” he said.

Professional Quake players have been involved in the process of shaping Quake Champions, id Software said in a September blog post. The game has continued to evolve based on player feedback, and the Quake Champions closed beta will only add to that.

An official release date for Quake Champions has not been released. It will, however, be playable this weekend at PAX East in Boston.
