Rust players on console and PC might exist in similar worlds, but the chances of crossplay with each other are pretty slim, depending on which version you own.
As Rust gained a substantial fan base on PC and a console port was created, it became apparent it would also have a sizable following on consoles. Console versions of the game were tested and released in 2021 and over time, Facepunch Studios did enable cross-play features, but with severe limitations.
So exactly what kind of crossplay support is there, if you are playing on PC and consoles?
Is there crossplay in Rust on PC and Consoles?
Technically, yes, Rust does offer crossplay, but it is limited. Console players can crossplay without any issues. The same applies to cross-gen; if you’re on a PlayStation 4, you can play with someone on a PlayStation 5, but that’s where crossplay ends.
If you are playing on PC, you cannot crossplay with players on consoles. The PC servers are the same for Rust, so if you bought the game on the Microsoft Store, you could still play with those who play on Steam.
The likelihood behind console and PC players being unable to crossplay together is likely due to certain players on PC having better advantages over consoles and modded servers being available for PC. This is pure speculation, though, with the official reason not known.
Will Rust eventually get crossplay to PC?
Sadly, the console version didn’t come out until 2021, and there was extensive testing to ensure the console version worked properly. Crossplay was probably not high on the list of the Rust developers, but they eventually got the console versions to work together in tandem.
Sadly, it doesn’t look like any crossplay between PC and console players has been in the works since that initial release. The game’s player base is also mainly on PC, with most support going towards the PC version versus its console counterpart.
If we had to guess, we don’t really expect to see any form of crossplay between PC or consoles in the future unless there is a sizeable player demand for it, since PC and console players seem to be more than happy to play on their own systems instead of going into servers with each other.
