Does Pokémon Legends: Arceus have multiplayer?

You'll at least be able to trade with other players.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus will give players an experience unlike any Pokémon game before it when the game is released on Jan. 28 for Nintendo Switch. But the semi-open world and new approach to the series’ gameplay looks like it compensates for a lack of features in other areas.

This is specifically true in regard to the game’s multiplayer capabilities, which seem to be limited due to the way Game Freak has changed the traditional gameplay mechanics and other elements in Arceus.

We still don’t know the exact specifics for how multiplayer will work in Arceus, but based on several leaks and information provided in previous updates, it doesn’t look like there will be an online battling mechanic.

This is likely due to the new style of battling, which implements a real-time system into the pre-existing Pokémon system that everyone is already used to, which would complicate how battles work against non-NPC trainers.

As for trading, there is going to be some element included in the game. Some details have been shared on the Story page of the game’s official website, where information about plans for a “trading post” can be found.

“Along with the headquarters of the Galaxy Team and your own lodgings, Jubilife Village boasts a range of useful institutions and services—such as the trading post, where you can trade Pokémon with other players,” the website says. “A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to enjoy certain features.”

It’s also important to keep in mind that Arceus will have some form of integration with Pokémon HOME in the future, though information about when that will go live and how it’s being handled hasn’t been shared.

With all of that in mind, even trading will likely be limited to select species within Arceus. But details about the full multiplayer suite won’t be made officially available until the game launches.
