EA has confirmed its plans for cross-play in Battlefield 2042, but it’s still a work in progress.
The company said in a new post that “a few thousand” participants will be invited to a technical playtest to help test cross-play functionality, which will work across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will have cross-play together.
“One of your most frequently asked questions is about cross-play,” the post reads. “We can confirm it’s a function we’re looking to build and test for Battlefield 2042. To accommodate that, we’ve made the decision to move the Technical Playtest to later this summer so we’ll have the opportunity to test the cross-play functionality.”
The playtest will be in a closed environment and under a strict NDA, so it will be a somewhat exclusive experience. The company warned that it will be played in a “development-led environment with only a subset of features, focused on technical performance” and it won’t be representative of the full game.
“Alongside cross-play we’re also building cross-progression and cross-commerce for Battlefield 2042, which will be shared across all platforms and travel with you wherever you go,” EA said. “For example, your unlocked progress and purchases in your PlayStation copy of the game will carry over onto the Xbox or PC version, and vice versa.”
The original technical playtest was initially meant to be deployed in the next few weeks, but the delay due to cross-play now means there’s no clear window for when it will be sent out to those who have applied other than “later this summer.”
Battlefield 2042 is scheduled to launch on Oct. 22.
