Each winner walked away with a cash prize of $10,000 each, with the rest of the $500,000 prize pool being distributed to top players in the TCG and VGC tournaments.

As worlds drew to a close and the closing ceremony began to be played out, The Pokémon Company had a surprise announcement awaiting all those at the venue— the location of the 2019 World Championship event.

The Pokémon 2019 World Championships will be played in Washington, DC, sometime next year in an unknown venue. The last time that a World Championship was held in Washington was back in 2014 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Pokémon X and Y were the main game at the time.

While no date was given, the event is likely to take place once again in August with eager trainers looking to gain entry to the event through the many regional tournaments throughout the world.

The 2019 tournament series is also expected to use Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon as its main game. The two games made their competitive debut in the 2018 event and no other core RPG series is expected to be released for any Nintendo system until the end of 2019, after Worlds comes to a close.
