Airwaks on the chopping block after Wolves’ playoff loss

Copenhagen Wolves have enjoyed their most successful League Championship Series split to date. Famed for participating in every LCS relegation tournament since the league began, the team battled their way into the playoffs before falling to H2K Gaming.

But despite this relative success, one player appears to be on the chopping block after a less-than-impressive split. Karim “Airwaks” Benghalia may have played his last game in a Wolves uniform, according to sources close to the team.

The player’s performances during the regular season have been underwhelming, finishing with the second-lowest KDA, third-fewest kills, and the most deaths out of all junglers in Europe. His only redeeming stat comes in the form of assists, where he ranks second only to Dennis “Svenskeren” Johnsen.

Many have attributed the Wolves’ success to newcomer Ales “Freeze” Knezinek and the rapid improvement of mid laner Soren “Soren” Frederikson. New coach Karl Krey, who joined before the Spring Split, could be looking to keep hold of his main talents and strengthen the lineup elsewhere, at the expense of Airwaks.

Airwaks joined Copenhagen Wolves in May 2014 as the replacement for Maurice “Amazing” Stuckenschneider, who had left to join American side Team SoloMid. At the time, Airwaks had been praised as an up-and-coming talent who specialized in breaking out off-meta picks.

A disappointing Summer Split in 2014 saw the team face relegations and come out unlikely victors over H2K Gaming. This split, the Wolves once again ended the regular season with a losing record, but this time made it to the playoffs—even if they did fall in their first match. For Airwaks, the LCS journey could very well be over as the Wolves look to strengthen ahead of the Summer Split.
