Another player has left the Copenhagen Wolves as the team is looking more like a sinking ship than a League Championship Series (LCS) contender.
Joey “Youngbuck” Steltenpool, one of the two longest standing members of the squad, is leaving the team. He’s brought this to the attention of management in the hopes they find a replacement for him in short order, though he notes that he will play the split to the best of his ability should it be required.
The move comes just one day after jungler Karim “Airwaks” Benghazi left. In that instance, Wolves had a replacement ready in Ilyas “Shook” Hartsema. But Steltenpool may need to wait a little longer for salvation.
“I want to thank all the fans for their support throughout the years, through thick and thin,” Steltenpool said. “League of Legends is still a game I love playing, and love teaching others in so I will stick around and consider my options after this is all said and done”
The top laner cites the “awful” atmosphere in the team as the primary reason for his decision, which mirrors the reasons given by Benghazi for his departure. That’s likely related to the recent leaks of private conversations involving team coach Karl “Dentist” Krey, which show Copenhagen Wolves was planning to create a super team at the end of the season, replacing most of the team’s roster.
After Benghazi’s departure yesterday, Krey said that “the overall team atmosphere is not bad by any means.” But apparently, he misread the situation. Today he admitted that the organization’s machinations likely hurt the team more than he realized.
“Especially after the departing of Airwaks I became aware of the fact of how much this affected the players and how wrong my behaviour was,” Krey said. “Never did I want to harm anyone. I am sincerely sorry for this.”
Now Copenhagen Wolves is in a sticky situation. They’re 2-6, tied with three other teams at the bottom of the LCS standings, in danger of relegation, or even auto relegation. With turmoil inside the team, they have a tough task ahead of them if they hope to stay in the LCS.
