Blizzard’s newest franchise in nearly two decades years, Overwatch, took over Twitch when its closed beta launched earlier this week. Blizzard isn’t letting the hype die down, fanning fans’ excitement earlier today with a new character announcement.

The newest Overwatch character is an amusingly meta tie-in to one of Blizzard’s most famous franchises: a fictitious former StarCraft 2 pro from Korea, D.Va (presumably pronounced “diva”).

According to a fictional bio on the StarCraft World Championship Series site, D’Va was the No. 1 ranked player in the world at age 16 and undefeated for three years before retiring to “focus on her commitment to protect the safety of her homeland.”

The bio also claims she is “MEKA’s newest recruit,” an acronym which has not been previously used in the game. Fans have speculated that MEKA is some sort of faction within the game’s lore.

D.Va may not be the only new content coming to the game in the near future, as the official Overwatch Twitter account posted this seemingly unrelated teaser earlier this week:

For now we have no indication of the timescale for new content, but it would be reasonable to guess more details will be announced at next weekend’s BlizzCon.
