After parting ways with three of its players in the off-season, Unicorns of Love was tasked with assembling a new roster around its top laner and support. With a nomination to Intel Extreme Masters San Jose this weekend, the team put the pieces together quickly.
The Unicorns’ three new players are familiar faces for European League Championship Series fans. But whether the roster sticks together after its upcoming event is unclear.
Former SK Gaming mid laner Hampus “Fox” Myhre (who the team teased on Unicorns’ social media) will fill in the mid lane. The team has brought back its 2014 jungler, who also substituted for the squad some in 2015, Berk “Gilius” Demir. And rounding out its carry roles is former Fnatic and Team Imagine marksman Pierre “Steeelback” Medjaldi.
These three will join long-standing top laner Kiss ” Vizicsacsi” Tamás and support Zdravets ” Hylissang” Iliev Galabov in the team’s new-roster debut against Counter Logic Gaming at IEM San Jose on Nov. 21.
Unicorns benched AD carry Pontus “Vardags” Dahlblom on Sept. 7 after failing to qualify for the World Championship. On Nov. 5, mid laner Tristan “PowerofEvil” Schrage and jungler Cho “H0R0” Jae-hwan left the team.
Myhre and Medjaldi’s addition should come as no surprise for Unicorns of Love fans. Both players had successful spring results in the European LCS with SK Gaming and Fnatic respectfully. Medjaldi, specifically, held his own against the best in the world at the Riot Games Midseason Invitational on May 7 to 10.
Neither saw much success in the summer, however. Myhre’s team was relegated, while Medjaldi’s journey across the pond ended after a promotion tournament loss to Team 8 on Sept. 6.
Demir, however, has played with many teams throughout the past year after being replaced on the Unicorns roster in Sep. 2014. Most notably, Demir’s time on the Team Nevo (later acquired by Gamers2) roster in 2015 showed him to be one of the best European Challenger junglers.
Now, as he makes his return, he’ll get a shot to prove himself against the likes of strong junglers Dennis “Svenskeren” Johnsen, Maurice “Amazing” Stückenschneider, and Lee “Chaser” Sang-hyun, depending on his team’s results this weekend.
Update 2:32pm CT Nov. 18: Unicorns of Love has confirmed the roster revealed in this report.
