Overwatch continues to clean up at video game awards ceremonies, this time taking home a host of awards at South By South West (SXSW).
Though Blizzard’s 2016 first-person shooter failed to take home the 2016 SXSW Gaming Awards’ Video Game of the Year title, Overwatch did take home four awards out of the 10 it was nominated for.
The SXSW Gaming Awards puts the last year’s games in a two-step vetting process: A panel of industry experts first decides on the top five choices in each category. Next, the public votes, alongside the industry experts, to decide the winners.
The Blizzard title took home awards for Excellence in Multiplayer, Most Promising New Intellectual Property, Trending Game of the Year, and Esports Game of the Year. To win Esports Game of the Year, Overwatch had to beat out titles like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Gears of War 4, Killer Instinct: Season 3, and Street Fighter V.
Overwatch has won Game of the Year in countless other awards shows, but missed out on the main award at SXSW. Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which won five awards in total, earned that title among the SXSW voters.
Launched officially in May 2016, Overwatch quickly amassed more than 25 million players across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The popular esports title has another chance to rack up a win as Game of the Year on April 6 at the British Academy Game Awards.
