Street Fighter V, Smash 4, and Smash Melee have seen huge drops in EVO registration

The statistics are out and they don't look good for the FGC community.

EVO’s event organizer, Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar, revealed the total number of registered users attending this year’s tournament earlier today—and it doesn’t look pretty for a few games.

EVO is one of the world’s biggest fighting game events that brings the best players in the world together in one place. Over 10,000 players will compete in nine different games for a chance to be crowned EVO champion, along with taking home a huge cash prize.

Street Fighter V, Super Smash Bros. 4, and Super Smash Bros. Melee, however, have seen huge decreases in the number of people attending from last year to this year, with the lowest, Smash Melee, currently having 40 percent less competitors in 2017. Overall, EVO has over 3,000 less registrants right now compared to 2016.

It’s not all doom and gloom, however, as Tekken 7 has seen a 133 percent rise in competitors from last year after the release of the console port last month.

Injustice 2 is preparing for its EVO debut with over 800 players signed up to throw down on the main stage. The original Injustice only managed to pull in just under 600 players when the game made its EVO debut in 2013, so this rise in registrants showcases how popular the series has become in the community over the years.

EVO 2017 will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 14 to 16, and it will be livestreamed on the srkevo Twitch pages.
