Black Ops 6 will have a ‘great mix of map sizes’ at launch, says Treyarch

Treyarch FTW.

The recently concluded Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 beta gave players a lot to think about, with mixed reactions towards the maps provided by Treyarch. However, the studio soon responded to the community’s concerns.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the famed Black Ops developer addressed the issue, saying, “For those curious about our map size variety at launch: the majority of Black Ops 6’s Core 6v6 maps are medium-sized, similar in size to Raid or Summit.”

The developer mentioned the sizes of all 16 launch maps, revealing that most were medium-sized while the rest were either small or “Strike,” with the latter used for the Face-Off or Gunfight game modes. Here’s the entire list of maps with their sizes, as confirmed by Treyarch:

  • Vault – Medium
  • Protocol – Medium
  • Lowtown – Medium
  • Red Card – Medium
  • Vorkuta – Medium
  • Skyline – Medium
  • Rewind – Medium
  • Scud – Medium
  • Subsonic – Small
  • Payback – Small
  • Babylon – Small
  • Derelict – Small
  • Warhead – Strike
  • Pit – Strike
  • Gala – Strike
  • Stakeout – Strike

Treyarch talked about map variety, improving player experience, and reassuring the playerbase that a selection of map sizes would be waiting for them at launch.

“We know map flow and variety are critical to the best player experience, and we’ve got a great mix of map sizes for Black Ops fans at launch.

Watch for comms soon with more details on the team’s focus areas coming out of Beta, including tac-maps for all the locations you haven’t played yet! Stay tuned and thank you for playing in the Beta!”

Many in the community rejoiced after the studio’s post, with one user calling it a “Huge W. ” Others pointed out some glaring issues, like broken spawns, maps feeling similar to old ones in the series, and the absence of the fan-favorite Nuketown map.

The official Call of Duty X account declared the Black Ops 6 beta the “biggest Call of Duty beta ever” in terms of hours played, player count, and matches played, and the many medium maps at launch generated a positive reaction.

However, this may not be the last we hear of maps being too small, as many players complained about the inclusion of tactical sprint and the new omnimovement feature, which may still impact the pacing of the smaller maps on launch.
