I'm starving.

Are you hungry? I’m hungry—I haven’t even eaten breakfast yet. Have you ever made spaghetti carbonara and just wolfed it down like a starving animal? I have. But where does “thoroughly devoured” come into all of this? I have some hints and the answer to today’s NYT Mini Crossword.

  • Hint 1: (3, 2)
  • Hint 2: Two words.
  • Hint 3: It begins with “A.”
  • Hint 4: Eating.

Oi you, stop scrolling! I’m about to reveal the answer.

Got it yet? The answer to two down in today’s New York Times Mini Crossword is “ATEUP.” Yes, ate up. Traditional crosswords usually indicate how many words an answer consists of, but that’s not the case with the NYT’s Mini Crossword. When you eat something up, you consume it in its entirety. Devour refers to eating something hungrily or quickly. Add thoroughly to devoured, and you get ate up.

Did yo know?

“Ate up” is military slang for a soldier who lacks organizational skills. “Little Timmy is all ate up.”

‘Thoroughly devoured’ NYT Mini Crossword difficulty rating

This clue confused me at first because my mind was set on one word, not two. But I eventually got the answer. “Devoured” instantly made me think of eating or consuming, so I’m going to give this clue a two out of five on the difficulty scale.
