  • Hint 1: The answer is the golf score term that showcases one over par.
  • Hint 2: The five-letter solution is also there in ——man, which is a mythical creature that is used by parents to scare children into showing good behavior.
  • Hint 3: It starts with the letter “B.”
  • Hint 4: The solution rhymes with “fogey.”

Let’s put down the golf club and reveal the answer.

Did you see it coming? The answer to eight across in the Sept. 8 New York Times Mini Crossword is “BOGEY.” The clue is quite straightforward as it talks about pars, the number of expected shots to put the ball in the hole. “Bogey” is the score when a golf player completes a hole in one stroke over par number.

There are multiple other terms, like birdie, eagle, albatross, and more, that denote the number of strokes taken by the player on a golf course to put the ball in the hole.

DID YOU KNOW?

In aviation, particularly during World War II, “bogey” was adopted to describe an unidentified aircraft that might be an enemy.

‘One over par’ NYT Mini Crossword difficulty rating

If you love riding the golf cart and have the niche knowledge of golf’s scoring terms, then the NYT Mini Crossword clue “One over par” should be a walk in the park for you. However, if you’re familiar with golf or any of the above-mentioned terms, you might struggle with the clue. I’d give it a three out of five for difficulty.
