  • Hint 1: The answer is a former U.S. President, whose four-in-a-row terms inspired the 1951 22nd Amendment, which limits future U.S. presidents to only two terms.
  • Hint 2: The three-letter solution is an abbreviation for the President’s name.
  • Hint 3: It starts with the letter “F”
  • Hint 4: The solution is a president who guided the U.S. during the Great Depression and World War II.

Let’s jump in and reveal the answer.

Did you see it coming? The answer to nine across in the Sept. 15 New York Times Mini Crossword is “FDR.” The clue has two parts. First, the “longest-serving U.S. president” is undoubtedly Franklin D. Roosevelt, who served four terms (1933–1945) and is the only U.S. president to serve more than two terms. The last “familiarly” part tells you how you can solve the clue by using a shortened version of the name.

DID YOU KNOW?

Franklin D. Roosevelt was diagnosed with polio in 1921 at the age of 39 which left him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite his disability, he became one of the most influential presidents in U.S. history.
