  • Hint four: It starts with an “S.”

‘Bicycle parts’ NYT Aug. 30 Mini Crossword solution

One across is “SPOKE,” the inner-metal frame of a bike wheel designed to keep the construction together and allow the vehicle to ride smoothly. Two down is “PEDAL“—the two protruding attachments your feet rest on to rotate and propel the bike forward.

If you’re after a quick clue breakdown, for one across, if someone “spoke,” they communicated. Additionally, if something is “bespoke,” it’s custom-fit to suit someone’s preferences and requests.

As for two down, a “medal” is a pretty common neck award, whereas “pedal to the metal” is a common phrase to signify gaining big speed with a vehicle.

‘Bicycle parts’ NYT Mini Crossword difficulty rating

Two down is a one out of five, and I don’t need to go into why—it’s an easy clue with an even more doable answer. I wouldn’t say the same for one across, though. Yes, a wheel, tire, and handlebars are all a piece of cake, but the word “Spoke” in a bike context might elude many. Using my reasoning, I’m giving this clue a four out of five—leaving us with a rare two-and-a-half difficulty rating as a complete average.
