‘Bed with a blankie’ NYT Mini Crossword clue answer and hints

Zzz.

I don’t know about you, but I’m tired—well and truly exhausted. I could easily slide back into bed with a lovely little blanket. But what’s a “bed with a blankie” called? This NYT Mini Crossword clue is all about places to sleep.

  • Hint 1: It starts with the letter “C.”
  • Hint 2: Slang for home.
  • Hint 3: Associated with babies.
  • Hint 4: Cot.

Stop right there! I’m about to reveal the answer.

Did you get it? The answer to five down in the Aug. 8 New York Times Mini Crossword is “CRIB.” A crib is a small bed for a baby or young child with bars around the side to stop them from falling out. A “blankie” is a blanket for children.

Crib is also slang in the U.S. to describe someone’s home. MTV Cribs, which aired from 2000 to 2010, featured tours of celebrities’ homes. (It definitely wasn’t a reality TV show about tiny little beds.)

DiD YOU KNOW?

In Old English, the word crib meant manger or stall.

‘Bed with a blankie’ NYT Mini Crossword difficulty rating

I actually struggled with this clue because we don’t call them cribs in the U.K. Our word for crib is “cot.” I know the word crib, so it probably took me longer than it should have to figure out the answer. I’m going to give this NYT Mini Crossword clue a three out of five on the difficulty rating scale. I don’t blame you for searching for the answer, especially if you’re not from the U.S.
