Whether you’re new to The Sims or just need a refresher, you’re bombarded from the moment you select New Game. Tutorials flood your vision, from character creation and building your new home to gaining control of your Sim for the first time. Regardless of whether you’re walking into a fully furnished place or have bulldozed the lot, The Sims has tons of information but with somewhat fiddly controls.

So, here’s how to rotate any item in The Sims 4.

Hold Shift and press comma (rotate left) or the period key (rotate right) to rotate items in The Sims 4. You can use the triggers to rotate if you’re playing on console. You must select the item you wish to rotate before using the rotate keys or buttons. The mouse or left analog stick moves the object around while Shift and comma or period (or the triggers) rotate the stationary object.

Items turn at a 45-degree angle every time you click for it to rotate. You can only select and rotate one item at a time. Once you are happy with the placement, click the interact key to drop it.

You can rotate any object in The Sims 4 (so long as the item you’re after is available for purchase or to sell). You likely already have an idea of how you want your new place to look, from particular lighting to accent colors and angling your furniture to a specific point in the room.

While every item can rotate, they are restricted to particular spots on your lot. Always refer to the directional arrows pointing to an item’s access point. For example, fridges, showers, and beds cannot be placed if the entry point is facing a wall. This will be displayed in a red color for invalid placement.

Feel free to experiment with the layout of your new home now that you know how to rotate items.
