Since popular livestreamer Dr Disrespect was banned from Twitch in June without any explanation from himself or the website, the gaming community has been on edge and seeking out any information it can to find the reason behind the ban.
Esports insider Rod “Slasher” Breslau, who reported Dr Disrespect’s ban was permanent and said he knew why he was banned, told streamer HasanAbi today that he hasn’t published the reason for the ban because he wants a publication to shield him.
“I don’t want to put it personally on Twitter and I do need a publication to back me,” Slasher said. “But this requires indemnity that I want and has been rather difficult to acquire and that means that I get legal protection from the outlet that I publish for from whatever would happen afterwards.”
Slasher also said a defamation lawsuit is of the highest concern and that’s why he or no other journalist has published the news on Twitter or elsewhere. Additionally, he said if a change in platforms was the issue, he would have already said so.
“I don’t need to see the signing sheet between Facebook and Mixer and Ninja, or CouRage and YouTube, or all of those to know the details of the deal, and that those were going to happen, and that was not an issue reporting on those types of claims,” Slasher said. “This really is different.”
Since neither Twitch or Dr Disrespect have said why he was banned, rumors have been common. One theory claimed a new streaming platform, Brime, lured Dr Disrespect from Twitch and that Twitch had banned him for trying to get out of his contract. Many streamers and Slasher have said this is completely false, though.
Twitch hasn’t made a statement regarding Doc’s future on the website. In his only public statement since the ban, Dr Disrespect said Twitch had not notified him about why he had been banned.
