Pokémon Go misses mark for October 2024 Community Day event

October 2024's Community Day won't be super spooky.

The Community Day events in Pokémon Go have been exceptionally solid for the past few months. These events feature a specific Pokémon, allowing it to learn a powerful move. But it looks like October 2024 will be the month where Niantic misses the mark as it’s featuring a less-than-spooky Pokémon.

On the official Pokémon Go X (formerly Twitter) account, the team revealed today that Sewaddle, the sewing Pokémon, will be the October 2024 Community Day featured choice. Sewaddle is a Bug and Grass-type, and its evolved form, Leavanny, shares the same typing. While this Pokémon might have made sense to feature in the spring, bringing it to the forefront in October—traditionally the month with more Dark and Ghost-type Pokémon—makes it feel like the team missed a note.

Pokémon Go fans are not taking it easy on this choice. Many are already pointing out that the only valuable thing about this event is they can get a new Shiny version for Sewaddle, and that’s about it. Unfortunately for trainers, Leavanny is not a practical choice in Battle League battles, even the select cups, and it’s not a choice you typically use for high-end raids.

The one thing connecting this event to October is that Leavanny can now use the fast move Shadow Claw. I will say that Shadow Claw does make it a more desirable choice, but don’t expect the swap out for a Ghost-type fast move to turn it into a powerhouse. Leavanny will continue to be a niche choice for Pokémon Go players moving forward.

This could have been a great chance for Pokémon Go to feature a Ghost-type Pokémon that players have been eager to add to their collection. Despite having strong choices over the past few months, such as Beldum, Ponyta, Cyndaquil, and Bagon, this choice feels like a swing and a miss by Niantic.

This won’t be every Pokémon Go player’s favorite event. Still, if you want to catch the new version of Sewaddle, check out the Community Day event on Oct. 5 from 2pm to 5pm in your local area. If you catch enough candy to evolve Sewaddle to Leavanny, it will learn Shadow Claw, which is an improvement on its standard moveset.
